80 days from direct-sowing. It's the new type of bean that began in England and is now all the rage across Europe: a cross of a succulent, tender French dwarf bean with a robust, vigorous runner! The result of many years of breeding, Stardust delivers generous yields of huge, delectable foot-long pods on handsome climbing plants. Try it this season and you just may find that you have a new "bean of choice" for easy growth and delicious flavor!
Stardust sets long, tender, nearly stringless pods packed with rich flavor. Measuring 12 inches from flowering base to tip, this is a bean and a half -- yet it isn't tough or stringy like traditional runner beans can be. The pods are smooth and meaty, the taste very rich.
This plant has much of the ornamental appeal of a traditional runner bean, with showy white blooms and a vigorous climbing habit. It keeps bearing into fall, and demonstrates good frost tolerance. It can even be self-pollinating!
Put Stardust to the test for ornamental appeal as well as flavor. This long, showy bean is terrific for stir fries, soups, stews, and steaming. We think you'll love the succulent bite. And as if that weren't enough, the climbing vine on which the beans grow is as lovely as any scarlet runner bean. The pea-like flowers are two-tone, a pale pink offsetting the rich red. They arise profusely from late spring through midsummer, adding beauty to the vegetable patch and height to the annual bed!
Expect this bean to reach 10 feet tall (or more) and about a foot wide. It needs support, and makes a great choice for a 3 Sisters planting. If direct-sowing, plant the seeds about 2 to 3 inches deep once the soil has warmed in spring. Space them about 12 inches apart, in rows 5 feet apart in rich, well-drained soil receiving full sunshine. Or you can begin the seeds indoors in late winter, germinating them at a temperature of 64 to 68 degrees F (germination will take between 7 and 10 days) and then growing them on slightly cooler. If you do begin the seeds indoors, let them harden off (get used to the weather) for about a week before you transplant them into the garden. (Placing them in a sheltered spot that receives a bit of shade and is free from strong wind is the best way to do this.)
Stardust is waiting to take off in your veggie patch! Try it out this season. 100 seeds per packet.
